Preface

How do we respond to this time of uncertainty, accentuated by three years of pandemic, the horror of on-going war, injustice, violence, climate upheaval, displacement, and hypnosis by the media?  Perhaps allows the kaleidoscopic feel of multiple interpretations depending on speaker, on circumstance. It is said that to a Dane, perhaps implies a yes; to a Swede, a no.  Perhaps, if literally translated from the French peut-être, becomes can be, but morphs into the grey area of possibility if understood as maybe this, or that.  The sound of perhaps whispers could be, with the kisses of the p, multiple tones of all that might be. 

The cover photo taken in August 2022 here in Rochester, NY reflects the implied perhaps of our human capacity for subjective perception—pareidolia, which imposes meaning. Is the sky a mirror universe?  For me, words dance such questions onto the page and echo mystery in their music.

I offer these poems as invitations to consider multiple and complex responses to our fast-changing world.
