Martha Deed lives in a house built on the North bank of the Erie Canal near its mouth at the Niagara River in Western New York. A retired Psychologist with a lifelong curiosity about history and culture, she began exploring the history of the land where the house now stands. Her Title begins with the Holland Land Company in 1835, but she was able to go further back to consider the history of this particular land fragment and to explore what it might reveal of the general area’s political and cultural past. She wanted to know how past events, whether we are aware of them or not, influence contemporary culture and values, how our personal histories may blind us to what is obvious to others.
