

Many of us live close to someone who chronically suffers from clinical depression. What kinds of positions does that place a sibling or spouse in? In the second half of my life, I increasingly turn to personal writing to understand and even honor particular features or episodes in my life. I’m particularly drawn to writing about family, however painful that might be, because family—its absences and presences, its joys and sorrows—defines, indirectly as well as directly, so many of the contours of our lives.
